Contra Costa Medical Career College’s Dental Assisting Program is 985-hours of theory, laboratory and clinical training geared to prepare the student for an entry level position in a Dental Office. The Program provides all the necessary training to enable the students acquire satisfactory skills and demonstrate competencies in a variety of dental office procedures and laboratory techniques. The student is presented front office management, preliminary examination procedures, chair side dentistry, charting, appointment scheduling, and records-keeping. Student graduates may find employment in dental clinics and private dental offices as dental assistants. Graduates receive BLS Certification from The American Heart Association and a Certificate of Completion. The primary goal of the CCMCC Dental Assistant Program is to prepare entry level dental assistants with the knowledge and skills competencies for patient care.
At the end of the course the participant will be able to successfully demonstrate:
• Demonstrate knowledge in basic sciences and clinical practice in the delivery of patient care.
• Exhibit professionalism and work ethics with co-workers and patients
• Demonstrate understanding of the ethics and scope of practice of a dental assistant
• Demonstrate effective communication skills.
• Demonstrate skills competencies in assessing, evaluating, planning and treating oral conditions.
• Perform dental procedures by employing asepsis and sterilization techniques
• Provide health education and nutrition counseling to dental patients.
Day Program Schedule 2023
-Monday, November 6th, 2023 - Thursday, July 18th 2024
Upon successful completion of the classroom component of the program, dental assisting students participate in 265 hours of externship. Serving an externship at an approved dental office gives externs an opportunity to work with patients and apply the principles of practice learned in the classroom. Evaluation is conducted by the Externship site personnel. Externship sites will be arranged by CCMCC and assignments will be given out no later than 30 days after the last day of the classroom training is completed, or from the date in which all required paperwork/documents have been received, whichever is later. Externship hours are most often during the day. Students MUST be available to compete required externship hours.

Standalone Courses
Contra Costa Medical Career College’s board approved Dental stand-alone courses provide working Dental Assistants with flexible weekend classes for advancement in the dental field. Each course is designed to help Dental Assistants become Registered Dental Assistants by providing four required certificates for licensure: Infection control, Coronal Polish, Pit and Fissure Sealants and Radiation Safety.
Infection control
An unlicensed dental assistant is required by the State of California to take an 8-hour course in Infection Control. This course covers the definition and implementation of sterilization methods and guidelines. Including patient medical history, infection control, prevention of contamination, and the use of personal protective equipment. It is a one day, 8-hour course hosted 1 Saturday only.
Coronal Polish
This course is designed to provide Dental Board of California approved instruction in coronal polishing for those seeking licensure as a Registered Dental Assistant. Only an RDA can perform coronal polish, however, certification must be completed prior to taking State Board examinations to obtain licensure. Students must have an infection control certificate within the last 2 years and BLS. This course requires 3 patients who are calculus free. They must be 18 years or older and have 24 natural teeth. This is a two day, 16-hour course offered on Saturday and Sunday (1 weekend).
Pit and Fissure Sealant
This course is designed to provide Board-approved instruction and certification in the application of Pit & Fissure Sealants for those already licensed as a Registered Dental Assistant or to meet licensure renewal requirements for new RDA’s. Students must have an Infection Control certificate earned within the last 2 years, Coronal Polish certificate and BLS. This course requires 4 patients that have been prescreened by a licensed DDS. Patients must be 18 years or older, have 24 natural teeth and must have 1 virgin tooth in each quadrant. Premolar or Molars ok. This is a two-day, 16-hour course offered on Saturday and Sunday (1 weekend).
Radiation Safety
The California Radiation Safety Certification course provides the student with the required course curriculum to obtain certification to produce dental radiographs in California. Students must have Infection Control Certificate earned within the last 2 years and BLS. This course requires 4 patients who have been prescreened by a licensed DDS. They must NOT have FMX (18 individual films-Pano’s are ok) or chest x-ray within the past year. Patients must be 18 years old or older and have 24 natural teeth. Radiation Safety Course is a four-day, 32-hour course offered on Saturday and Sunday (2 consecutive weekends).
